Monitoring application performance is simple…as long as the application and the deployment architecture are also simple. The mystery appears as the complexity of the application architecture grows and begins to span from an isolated Java or .NET silo into a full-blooded composite application spanning web, middleware and mainframe tiers. Unraveling this mystery can be daunting as the builders of the application often view their role as within a silo, e.g. web, application server, or database. However, as transactions traverse across tiers the consequences of what has been coded is not always clear to the developer. They may have done a perfect job in Java, but their objects might have created something in the database that unknowingly persists after the Java part of the application has exited and its objects are destroyed. And that is where problems start to creep in…unknowable consequences whose frequency grows with complexity.

Complexity itself is a word that can be used to describe composite applications. According to Wikipedia: “A complex system is a system composed of interconnected parts that as a whole exhibit one or more properties (behavior among the possible properties) not obvious from the properties of the individual parts.” One may conclude (sometimes, erroneously) from this definition that misbehavior in one or more components of a complex system may not necessarily compromise the system as a whole. The challenge is in how to know that our “complex system” is misbehaving or acting outside of “normal” and what is the impact of this?

Today’s monitoring tools are pretty good at identifying known faults such as server availability, network errors, resource utilization, etc – piece parts. A typical data center receives many thousands of alerts (sometimes millions) daily about all kinds of faults. Many alerts have nothing to do with system-wide outages, but are in fact part of the normal operation of complex systems. But, from this never ending stream of event big data, how do we separate the signal from the noise and detect abnormal behavior?

For example, a “server down” alert is clearly an indication of a failed system. However, if the server is clustered and the failover succeeded without service interruption, the “server down” is part of normal operation of a complex system and should not raise a red flag. The same applies to the performance attributes of complex systems such as response time, volume and latency. Knowing normal ranges, deviations (dispersion) is key to understanding how complex systems behave. The other crucial dimension of composite applications is transaction flow, which is the context and the flow of information from one part of the application to another – their behavior.

Real-time application performance monitoring of composite applications requires low-latency analysis using something like a Complex Event Processing engine in order to effectively understand the performance behavior of composite applications as it unfolds. It must be able to rapidly determine whether current behavior is normal or abnormal or trending towards abnormal and then take action. For more on this topic see the white paper here.

Given that cyclists tend to wear glasses during their races, Jon Cleave has come up with the Oakley GPS concept, an eye-wear based on the design of the currently favored model. Utilizing an OLED micro-display lens, the Oakley GPS will provide the cyclist a wide range of information that they can use to help track, monitor and ultimately improve their performance.

The information provided includes the ability to track their own position during a race, track their competitors’ distances, compare personal bests and track lap times. Since all of this information can get a bit distracting, the OLED will only activate at certain checkpoints during a race.

Apart from those abilities, the Oakley GPS will also take into consideration the rider’s sweat and in order to prevent the glasses from slipping off their face, the sides of the glasses will tighten as the body temperature in the cyclist’s body rises. This is thanks to the Oakley Unobtanium Ear Sleeves and Oakley Unobtanium Nose Piece that supposedly increase grip with the rise in moisture level. Pretty cool, huh? With Google’s Project Glass in the works and with a head mounted displays already available for purchase, the Oakley GPS could become a reality in the near future.

The performance of applications and corporate networks are increasingly intertwined and Compuware’s spring release of its Compuware APM Platform offers new capabilities that help IT departments wrestling with complex data center management tasks.

The release also offers new capabilities for monitoring cloud, mobile and “Big Data” applications, and it marks the next phase of Compuware’s efforts to integrate its DynaTrace acquisition with the core APM platform. Compuware acquired DynaTrace in July 2011 and it’s a sub-brand under the Compuware APM brand.

“It all relates to faster problem identification and root-cause analysis,” said Jeff Loeb, Compuware product and solutions marketing vice president, in an interview about the new Compuware APM release.

[Related: 10 More Hot Products From Interop 2012]

The enhancements are also a boost for Compuware channel partners because the software’s automated capabilities make it easier for solution providers to work with the technology, Loeb said, and because the improvements make it attractive to a wider audience.

The new release uses single points of instrumentation for network diagnostics in the context of application performance, according to the company. It also offers pre-built dashboards that provide a single view of application and network performance, including for Web and on-premise applications.

The system also monitors private cloud and virtualized systems, and provides “auto-correlated, code-level analysis” for drilling down to find the root cause of application problems using the DynaTrace PurePath analysis technology.

Compuware has enhanced the DynaTrace Enterprise system to provide what it calls “deep transaction management” for cloud and Big Data applications. It now offers visibility into both Cassandra NoSQL and Hadoop Map/Reduce Big Data environments through the use of analytics and dashboards. And the PurePath auto-discovery, auto-adaptive instrumentation provides more visibility into multi-cloud and hybrid cloud environments.

And Compuware has improved the Compuware User Experience Management technology for monitoring the performance of mobile native and browser-based applications, what the vendor calls the increasingly complex “edge of the Internet.”

DynaTrace PurePath can now drill down into code-level details, incidents and visit histories for applications running with all browsers and all device types. Loeb said IT managers could now compile application metrics such as transaction abandonment rates by using the system.

“It’s our belief that native mobile applications are becoming increasingly critical, and so it’s becoming more important to monitor their performance,” Loeb said. “Performance is really starting to matter.”

Compuware also has changed some of the packaging for the APM Platform to make implementation easier and to lower the starting price to below $100,000, Loeb said. The new release will be generally available this month.

2012-05-18 13:43:21 – Increases in downtime and targeted attacks cause businesses to consider new proactive approaches to application performance monitoring

London, 18 May 2012 – Following a number of high-profile outages in recent weeks, including The Royal Mail, Google Gmail and Virgin Media, businesses need to reconsider their approach to Application Performance Management (APM), says ExtraHop Networks, an innovative provider of network-based APM solutions.

A survey of IT managers by Applied Research and Symantec has shown that a combined total of around 2,765 hours were lost in downtime in 2011 across the globe, a figure which costs businesses dearly in terms of lost revenue and tarnished brand reputation. Whether the result of a network issue, application error or targeted attack it is clear that organisations need to move towards proactively managing application performance or face negative consequences.

Owen Cole, VP EMEA, ExtraHop

Networks, commented: “Today’s IT environments are growing rapidly and becoming very complex, especially with the rise of cloud, virtualisation, enterprise mobility and agile development. Because of this, spotting and diagnosing problems is becoming increasingly difficult and traditional approaches to APM are no longer sufficient.”

“In today’s connected world it is key that business-critical applications, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, customer relationship management (CRM) systems, supply chain systems and a company’s website or email services are always available and responsive to users.”

Cole’s comments follow a string of outages from key brands over the past month—from the crashing of the Paddy Power website just before the Grand National to the hacking of Virgin Media’s website last week. Many outages are the result of malicious intervention, which is actually relatively simple to detect with the correct technology, while others, such as the downtime of Google’s Gmail and Royal Mail’s online services, are left unexplained.

“Not only does any downtime cause severe disruption to both the business and customers, but it can be detrimental to a brand’s reputation. All businesses need to be able to predict, see and fix issues in real time, and we urge any organisation that does not have this visibility to implement changes immediately,” Cole added.

An increase in user and customer demand for more services has put increasing pressure on both applications and the network, and more often than not, issues are only recognised when it’s too late. The main problem lies with the fact that most companies are embracing a reactive approach to performance management that focuses simply on gathering data and analysing it after something goes wrong.

Cole concluded, “It is clear that a fresh approach to performance management is needed and with the next generation of monitoring solutions now more accessible than ever, businesses really have no excuse for any downtime.”

Press release date: April 5, 2011

Packet Flow Switch expands UCS suite, offering the lowest latency aggregation and monitoring switch on the market

MARLTON, N.J. — ONPATH Technologies, the leader in scalable connectivity and monitoring solutions for high performance networks, and Simena, LLC, the innovative leader in network monitoring and testing solutions, today announced a strategic partnership to add the industry’s lowest latency aggregation, filtering, and monitoring switch, the Simena Packet Flow Switch (PFS) into ONPATH’s UCS suite.

The PFS employs Layer 2-4 technology to aggregate, filter, disseminate, and load-balance network traffic to a variety of devices, including monitoring, measurement, and security tools. The PFS enables customers to optimize the performance and investment of these expensive tools, while allowing network managers to reduce cost by centralizing operations, monitoring services, and enhancing network security. Designed to help users increase productivity in monitoring and troubleshooting, the PFS provides flexibility with test configurations through the use of existing network tools, while saving valuable SPAN ports on switches.

The Packet Flow Switch delivers such advanced features as:

– Aggregation of several traffic streams to a single network tool — Packet filtering to enable users to pick and choose specific packets to be forwarded — Packet slicing to enable users to forward only the configurable portions of a packet, increasing throughput and maximizing the performance of attached monitoring systems — Port Tagging to mark packets with the port IDs where they are received, enabling the identification of packet origins — Scaling up to 100,000 ports when used in conjunction with the UCS

In addition, the PFS provides the ability to run all of these advanced features at full wire speed, without impacting performance, to provide unprecedented flexibility and complete control in forwarding packets with an unlimited number of connectivity options.

With the addition of the Simena’s PFS to ONPATH’s Physical Layer product suite, the UCS is now expanded to provide the industry’s most complete Layer 1 through 4 connectivity and monitoring solution across Enterprise and Federal applications. With speed- and protocol-independent connectivity ranging from RS-232 to 100Gbps and beyond, including standard protocols such as Ethernet, Fiber Channel, and SONET, as well as proprietary protocols, the ONPATH solution provides monitoring of performance and security applications across virtually any network infrastructure. ONPATH enables customers to increase their overall network security, reliability, and performance; increase the utilization of existing data center, monitoring, and security tools; monitor more with less budget and personnel; simplify the operation of their network; manage change more quickly; and adhere to compliance mandates.

“We are pleased to partner with Simena to offer our customers this advanced packet-intelligent product in an exciting new area for us,” said Brian McCann, CEO of ONPATH. “ONPATH has an aggressive roadmap of product innovation, and the PFS is the perfect complement to our UCS family, enabling us to move up the stack from Layer 1 through Layer 4, in order to deliver our customers a more complete suite of network monitoring and connectivity solutions.”

“Our partnership with ONPATH will provide the opportunity for entry into broader solutions,” said Sezen Uysal, President of Simena. “Simena’s unique approach to the PFS enables us to easily and quickly add new features and functionality to adapt to customer needs. Offering the PFS as part of the UCS family ensures that customers can monitor their network application performance at a higher level, with complete confidence, lowest latency, and ultimate accuracy.”

(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) London, — Following a number of high-profile outages in recent weeks, including The Royal Mail, Google Gmail and Virgin Media, businesses need to reconsider their approach to Application Performance Management (APM), says ExtraHop Networks, an innovative provider of network-based APM solutions.

Owen Cole, VP EMEA, ExtraHop Networks, commented: “Today’s IT environments are growing rapidly and becoming very complex, especially with the rise of cloud, virtualisation, enterprise mobility and agile development.

Cole’s comments follow a string of outages from key brands over the past month – from the crashing of the Paddy Power website just before the Grand National to the hacking of Virgin Media’s website last week.
