Q&A: Selling a computer ?
Question by d(^_^)b: Selling a computer ?
OK, I’m planning on selling my computer. Its a custom pc that I built MYSELF (sorry for the all caps but as far as I can tell y. answers doesn’t have italicized lettering available), so I know a lot about computers, and would like to know what to say, what not to say, and where to sell. Most of the questions asked will be opinion questions, but some will be technical (Please for the love of god, don’t answer the technical stuff if you don’t know anything beyond basic operation of a computer. It is really aggravating and annoying when some one who is technically challenged gives a retarded answer that just proves their own f*cking stupidity. sorry for the rant).
1. Since I don’t have a legal copy (not saying i have an illegal copy) of windows XP or Vista, should I include no operating system, Ubuntu, or Windows 7 beta (windows 7 is not vista, it is the unreleased new version of windows that can be obtained form Microsoft for free as a beta)?
2. Would it even be legal to include windows 7 on it?
3.Should I include lots of freeware? or would this just become bloatware?
4. Is it legal to include the freeware?
5. Should i go with 64-bit or 32-bit OS (have 4gb of ram btw)
6. I have 2 hdd’s should i set them up in a dynamic partition software RAID 0?
7.What kind of freeware would be nice to include?
8. It is lightly and slightly used, so should i mention this or only say so if they ask (not a matter of morals but of selling appeal)
9. What kind of a price should I ask for (specs of computer will be found at end)
10. Where should I sell it?
11. Should i use big, technical words that will make it seem better than it actually is?
12. Any advice as to what to say about it.

Be completely honest. What’s more frustrating than not getting the price you want is having an unsatisfied buyer bugging you about a refund.
I’d sell it on Craigslist as a gaming computer. The video card is solid for most games.
I’d wipe the hard drive, install ubuntu and say that you had to remove Windows because you needed your key. Installing beta Windows 7 is shady because it’s a beta. You could suggest that people install 7 or XP on their own.
I really just think honesty is the most important thing. And honestly, it’s a bad@ss computer with a sh*t ton of RAM and elite components.
edit – I didn’t answer all your questions.
- Install both HDs as separate hard drives. RAID is beyond most people.
- Price – List at $ 400. The main components are getting older and it’s custom built with no warranty. I think you might have to settle for less in the end though.
- Don’t include anything but the basics in Ubuntu. Let people install their own stuff and list it as “clean”.
- Definitely say that it was only lightly used and that everything works perfectly (if it does)
- Install 32-bit ubuntu b/c 64-bit is a java nightmare.
