Laptop: HP DV6-3250us Entertainment Notebook
OS: Windows Home Premium x64
HDD: TOSHIBA MK7559GSXP with firmware GN001C

Whenever I run an application that monitors HDD temperature, I always get something like “temperature unsupported”, “unable to read temperature”, etc.

I use Speedfan and Speccy as my main monitoring/information software. Speed fan was able to read the SMART but- not the temp.

Why on earth cant I get software to read the temperature?
HP said it may be a bad HDD- which is not the case.
Toshiba said it is probably a corrupted Operating System or Operating System files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated- I have no clue as to what is going on.
Actually, I have been working close with the creator/developer of speedfan. He has been helping me for two days now and he sent me a custom BETA allowing me to see the HDD temp as well as my DIMMs and usb HDDs.

I did find a pice of software called CrystalDiskInfo and it was able to read the temp right off the bat with no issues. It also showed that my current HDD does not support AAM. I dont know if that makes a difference or not.
Unfortunately, HD Tune was also unable to read – anything actually.
oops also up top I noticed I put just Windows. It is Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

Just realized that HD Tune free version has not been updated since Feb 2008. No wonder it cant read anything.

Maybe SpeedFan and Speccy clash with each other, or maybe Toshiba are right and something has messed up the relevant system files – installing or uninstalling programs can do this.

Are you using the latest versions of SpeedFan / Speccy – Old versions may not have the same support as new versions.

You could also try a similar program: ‘HD Tune’ – It’s a nice app. here:

Some makers drives, seagate for instance just give out random data instead of proper readings for some of their smart stats.

Edit:
Oops, didn’t notice that HD tune was getting old – well spotted.
AAM = Automatic acoustic management, not important – especially if the drive is already quiet.
